We Made It
We made it to MachakilHa! We spent the morning in Dolores, finishing up a few things, starting work on a new concrete block sign for the school, enjoying a thank you celebration that included singing and traditional Mayan dancing and being treated to a delicious lunch.
Then the REAL adventure began! We loaded up our gear onto 11 horses and headed on the five mile trek to MachakilHa. Most of the saddles were actually for carrying large loads of corn, not people, so they were basically like sitting on a chunk of wood for two bumpy hours. The scenery was worth the trip. MachakilHa is probably the most beautiful village we’ve been to in Belize.
The principal was kind enough to lend us his home for a few days, so we set up camp, hung our mosquito nets and taught ourselves how to sleep in a hammock. We heard some interesting sounds overnight, including howler monkeys.
