The Adventure Begins!
After a 5:15 a.m. departure and a long day of travel we arrived at ChabilBe Lodge about 7:30 p.m. and were treated to a great dinner. It was an early night for everyone.
Sunday morning we headed to San Lucas where Ann had a meeting with men in the village to discuss the maintenance of the water system. Two families invited us for lunch, so first we went to the Pan’s home where Nella had prepared tamales stuffed with cohune cabbage. This plant is more like a heart of palm than an actual cabbage and the tamale is cooked in a banana leaf. They were delicious. The next lunch was in the home on the Salams. Margarita prepared chicken caldo with cabbage in it, this time it was traditional cabbage! We made several other stops along the way to buy crafts and visit old friends. We then went to visit the ruins at NimLiPunit . Despite the rain, it was interesting to see structures that are several thousand years old. As it turns out, tomorrow is a national holiday, Heroes and Benefactors Day, so the schools are closed. So instead of teaching in Dolores we will be helping to paint the new school building in Otoxha. After rain all day yesterday, the sun is shining and we’re ready to start the day.
