Machakilha
We made the long trek down to a Machakilha on Wed. after spending the morning in Dolores. We hiked in about two miles down a dirt path while horses carried our school supplies and camping gear. Mr. Bol, the principal, invited us to stay in his home for two nights while he moved his family (five children!) in with his in-laws. We were treated to home cooked meals during our stay, and felt welcomed by the entire village. We taught lessons about the water cycle, wrote pen-pal letters to friends at All Saints, taught lessons about the environment, had a women’s health talk, did some amazing art and math projects, planted a school garden and built bookshelves for the school library. It was a busy two days. On Thursday night we had a big bonfire and attempted to teach several line dances to the families. We will never again hear the Cupid Shuffle without smiling about the crazy fun night! We discovered that roosters in Belize crow ALL night, hammocks are NOT really fun to sleep in and fresh, clean water is a luxury we all take for granted.
