Churches, Chickens, and Community
1/8/23
DAY 2: We started our day with breakfast together that the Sisters cooked for us, and then went on a beautiful scenic drive to Otoxha, where Father Bob conducted mass at St. Mark’s, along with a catechist.
This was a very special treat since most villages only have mass 5-6 times a year because the villages are so spread out and there are only two priests to service 36 villages. It was crazy how many chickens and pigs we saw along the way. They were EVERYWHERE! We also saw numerous roosters, turkeys, dogs, horses, and cows. We even saw cattle egrets standing ON the cows!
Even though English is primarily used in Belize, the catechist used kekchi and was able to translate Father Bob as needed. Lively musicians created music and song for our added enjoyment. After mass, we accepted Manuel’s kind invitation into his home for lunch.
We spoke with quite a few locals on the road and while driving, and were even invited into a few homes to shop. Everyone was friendly, and excited to see Ann and our group. We made sure to support them and bought some handmade goodies (Wooden Bowls, Bead necklaces, Purses, etc.).
We ended our day with Sylvester at Hicatee Church so we could get a feel for their current status and make a game-plan. We will have a construction crew there all week assisting.
Keep posted for updates!
